Customer Story: Naim Audio

Wednesday March 4, 2020 at 9:00am

“Not only do our units have to sound world class, but they also have to look and feel premium too. So the choice of materials and finishes is as important as sound quality.” - Jonathan Marsden, Mechanical Design Manager at Naim Audio

Julian Vereker MBE (1945 - 2000), who built the first Naim amplifier in 1973, founded Naim Audio over 46 years ago. He was driven by nothing more than a desire to experience music in his home as it was when he heard it live. Since then, Naim Audio’s ultimate mission has been to create a deeper, more immersive music experience.

We interviewed Mechanical Design Manager at Naim Audio, Jonathan Marsden, about their use of SOLIDWORKS and other add-ons, such as Flow Simulation. Jonathan comments, “Sound quality is critical when designing our products. Although the electronics and software play a massive part in creating the Naim sound, small changes mechanically can have product changing consequences. For example, something as mundane as a paint change on a part, can and often will change the sound of units.”

He continues, “Within our department, the day to day use of SOLIDWORKS is pretty standard. Drawings, part and assembly construction etc. These are all managed through our PDM system. However, there are times when we require the more advanced features of SOLIDWORKS such as Circuit Works and Flow Simulation. We also use Composer within our Production Engineering department, which gives us great visibility and consistency with the shop floor staff. It also allows us to control any approved changes to design or parts, making sure they’re included in the instruction manuals almost instantly.”

“Flow Simulation has improved our time to market for several projects. Without these tools, we would have had to build more prototypes and, due to the size and complexity of some of our products, we simply could not do it in the time frame desired. We can try changes and ideas without committing to physical parts and it’s also reassuring to see that the Flow Simulation results validated when our first prototypes are eventually built!”
